August 8, 2018: The S&P 500 closed flat at 2,857.77. The DJIA closed flat at 25,583.55. Separately, the Nasdaq was flat at 7,888.33.
Wednesday was a mixed day for the broad U.S. markets. Crude oil backed off the most we have seen in the last couple of weeks. The S&P 500 sectors were more or less split down the middle. The most positive sectors were technology and financials up 0.4% and 0.4%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were consumer staples and energy down 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively.
Crude oil was last seen trading down 3.3% at $66.81.
Gold was last seen trading up 0.3% at $1,221.50.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was Fossil Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: FOSL) which fell about 12% to $23.23. The stock’s 52-week range is $5.50 to $32.17. Volume was about 10 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.8 million.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Michael Kors Holdings Limited (NYSE: KORS) which traded up over 6% at $69.87. The stock’s 52-week range is $41.47 to $70.99. Volume was about 8 million compared to the daily average volume of 2.7 million.
