September 6, 2018: The S&P 500 closed down 0.4% at 2,878.11. The DJIA closed flat at 25,995.94. Separately, the Nasdaq was down 0.9% at 7,922.73.
Thursday was a down day for the broad U.S. markets, continuing what has been a horrible week for the Nasdaq. Crude oil backed off again to fall further below $70. The S&P 500 sectors were more or less split down the middle. The most positive sectors were utilities and industrials up 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were energy and technology down 1.7% and 0.7%, respectively.
Crude oil was last seen trading down 1.1% at $67.98.
Gold was last seen trading up 0.3% at $1,204.50.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was KLA-Tencor Corp. (NASDAQ: KLAC) which fell about 10% to $106.52. The stock’s 52-week range is $93.76 to $123.96. Volume was about 3.5 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.4 million.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Fossil Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: FOSL) which traded up over 4% at $23.19. The stock’s 52-week range is $5.50 to $32.17. Volume was 1.7 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.8 million.
